Democracy for America, the grassroots group founded by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, has named its top 10 progressive candidates in this year's House races.
The group said Thursday the top candidates are Alan Grayson and Lois Frankel in Florida, Norman Solomon and Jose Hernandez in California, Mark Pocan and Kelda Roys in Wisconsin, Ilya Sheyman in Illinois, Angela Zimmann in Ohio, Eric Griego in New Mexico, and Annie Kuster in New Hampshire. All are running for seats in the House of Representatives.
The 10 were selected through "Grassroots All-Stars," Democracy for America's annual competition for candidates challenging incumbents or seeking open seats. The group said 200 candidates entered this year's contest and more than 70,000 votes were cast by the progressive group's members.

Speaking to reporters in front of the Toledo VA Outpatient Clinic in South Toledo, Ms. Zimmann, a Democrat, said she would better serve veterans than Mr. Latta.
"My opponent in this race has a net worth of $2.3 million, and he seems indifferent to the needs of District 5 veterans," she said. "In fact, we can show how Bob Latta was part of an effort to cut housing assistance for 10,000 homeless veterans, leaving them on the street, while giving more tax breaks to multimillionaires like himself. The voting records of Congress also indicate that in October, 2009, [he] voted to eliminate school lunch funding for children whose parents were fighting overseas."

  • Occupy BG protesters have no intention of quietly walking away from the site that has become their home in downtown Bowling Green.
After nearly six weeks of primarily peaceful coexistence between the protesters, city government and downtown businesses, the Occupy BG participants were under city orders today to remove their campsite by noon from the publicly owned Community Commons in the 100 block of East Wooster Street.

  • Angela Zimmann says she's running for Congress, and she's taking on long-time Republican Bob Latta for Ohio's fifth US House District.
